Blink and you might miss Little Hanoi down narrow, bustling Ta
Hien Street, right in the heart of Hanoi's old quarter. At first
glance, its unassuming premises (not to be confused with the other
Little Hanoi, off Hoan Kiem Lake) doesn't make it stand out from
the rest of the crowd. But its constantly overflowing patronage
nad entries into the guidebooks means the owners must be doing
something right.
A cosy, family-run establishment, Little Hanoi
serves delicious Vietnamese home cooking at ridiculously good
value. Dining here many times, it never fails to satisfy.
Recommended dishes include fried tuna with sweet and sour source
(VND 28,000), fried squid with garlic and vegetables (VND 30,000),
or the house specialty, the succulent and spicy fried chicken with
five tastes, all served with steamed rice.
From the vegetarian
range, try the grilled aubergine (VND 20,000). However, do not
miss the recently introduced "roll your own" fresh spring rolls
with fried tuna, lemon and dill. Perfect as a starter for two,
this sensationally tasty dish will remind you of why you are in
this country in the first place. Due to its reputation and
miniscule size, Little Hanoi is usually full, due to popular
demand a second small premises across the street has opened at No.
14. But still get there early, or make reservations.
