SEA
FESTIVAL |
|
This festival is organised at Tran Chau fishing village
(Cat Ba). After the ceremony for the Water Spirit (Long
Vuong), the commanding drum resounds and hundreds of
shouting boys carrying oars begin running to their boats.
One boy rows, while the other boy casts nets and beats a
rhythm on the boat. The stronger and faster the beating,
the more frightened the fish are and likely to get caught
in the net.
Towards midday, a drum orders the boats to return. The
boys carry their fish to the communal house yard where the
elders of the village mark the competitors. Those who
catch the biggest fish and the greatest number of fish are
given prizes. The biggest fish is chosen to be grilled on
a splendid fire; the remaining fish are distributed to all
the people present. |
