LE VAN DUYET TEMPLE FESTIVAL |

Date:
1st day of the 8th lunar month
Le Van Duyet Temple, located in Binh Thanh District, is
dedicated to Officer Le Van Duyet and his wife. The festival
takes place on the anniversary of the death of Le Van Duyet.
The Death anniversary of Le Van Duyet is commemorated at his
mausoleum at the end of the seventh and the beginning of the
eight lunar from all over Vietnam, the festival often begins
earlier and can last well after the official ceremony.
In addition to tradition southern rituals, there are
performances of Vietnamese opera in the temple's front area.
Devotees burn incense and paper votive objects, and also
consult the oracle for answers to questions concerning their
life, family, marriage or work, and wish for property, good
luck and promotion.

NGHIA AN HOI
QUAN PAGODA FESTIVAL |

Date: 15th of the 1st lunar month and
24th
of the 6th lunar month
Nghia An Hoi Pagoda, situated at 678 Nguyen Trai St. in
District 5, is dedicated to Quan Cong, an eminent Chinese man,
and other spirits. Every year, the Hoa people, numerous Kinh
people, and other visitors from distant provinces, take part
in the two festivals.
On the 14th day day of the first lunar month, unicorn, lion
and dragon dance group perform for audiences on the large
field in front of the pagoda. According to custom, only
vegetarian offerings are made to Quan Cong, while the other
spirits are offered dishes containing meat.
Following the worshipping ceremonies, there are artistic
activities on the grounds of the pagoda lasting for a few
nights. This festival aims to glorify and to demonstrate the
admiration of the Hoa community for Lord Quan Cong.

THIEN HAU PAGODA FESTIVAL |

Date: 23rd - 24th of the 3rd lunar month
Thien Hau Pagoda, also called Lady Pagoda, is located at 710
Nguyen Trai St., in District 5. According to legend, Lady
Thien Hau, who was originally from China, sacrificed her life
to save human beings.
The ceremony held in her honour, on the 23rd day of
the 3rd lunar month, is the biggest ceremony that
take place at Thien Hau Pagoda. People pray to her for
happiness, prosperity, and solidarity.
The festival ends on the afternoon of the 24th day
of the 3rd lunar month. Lion dance performances
take place in the yard of the pagoda. This festival plays an
important role in the spiritual life of the city's Chinese, as
well as Vietnamese Communities.

FISHMAN'S FESTIVAL AT CAN GIO |

The
Practise of worshipping and staging a procession for a whale is a
popular belief of fishermen in the coastal areas that stretch from
central Vietnam to the southernmost province of Ca Mau.
The Fisherman's in Ho Chi Minh City is celebrated in the commune of Can
Thanh, Can Gio District, on the 16th day of the eighth lunar month. All
fisherman stop catching fish on this day in order to attend the
festival, while the shrines, fishing harbour and boats are all
beautifully decorated.
The festival is divided into three stages: Le Ruoc Ong (worshipping the
memory of ancestors), an offering period (roast white pork, colourful
steamed sticky-rice, wine and tea); and the the main worshipping
ceremony.

DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF TRAN HUNG DAO |

Every year, on the 20th day of the eighth lunar month, Vietnamese people
honour the death anniversary of Tran Hung Dao, a national hero from the
18th century.
In Ho Chi Minh city, there are many places worshipping Dao's life, but
the Tran Hung Dao Temple is home to the area's largest ceremony. It
features traditional rituals form the North.
